The Second Earl of Durham (George Frederick D’Arcy) and his wife Beatrix (2^nd daughter of the Duke of Abercorn) had thirteen children – that’s Francis, D’Arcy, Claude, Jack (Third Earl), Frederick William (Fourth Earl), Hedworth, William, George, Charles, Eleanor, Beatrix Louisa, Katherine and Anne.

One was killed in the Great War, one became an Admiral, two were Generals, one played cricket, one trained Derby winners, three became Duchesses – they were rich, privileged and well-connected. Not always lovable, perhaps, but their stories say much about British history in the last half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth. Peter Welsh presents this talk.
