About Gateshead Local History Society

Gateshead Local History Society was formed in September 1964 by Gateshead Libraries and our membership has continued to grow each year. We meet at Gateshead Central Library on the second Wednesdayof each month from September to May (excluding January) at 2.00pm with an annual subscription of £5.00. We also ask you to pay a £1.00 charge per meeting.

If you’re not a member of the Society but you’d like to attend a talk we’d love to see you. A charge is made for non-members of £4 per meeting.

We have eight meetings per year and our local history nights have a variety of speakers on both local and regional heritage. For more information please see our Events page.

We are often involved in projects. Our latest concentrated on Gateshead and the First World War. We are still collecting information so if you have details of any relatives who died during the First World War and who lived in Gateshead that you would like to share please get in touch.

Members plan displays, walks and talks during Local History Month each year and for the past six years we have arranged a Perambulation which is a 12 mile walk of the old Gateshead Boundary. If you would like more information about any of our events please get in touch.
